October 24, 2019 - The half day economic retreat and discussion was facilitated through UGA Archway Partnership and Carl Vinson Institute at the Thomson-McDuffie Government Center Complex. The idea of this meeting came out of a prior training/orientation session for the Industrial Development Authority, and the questions new members had.  For example: What should they be doing as an authority to promote and encourage development?  How does the Authority fit into local, public and private economic development efforts?  Which local leadership groups drive community development?   What challenges and opportunities do we have as a community that will affect future development, and how do we work together to fix the bad/promote the good? The local governments have held retreats prior, but those meetings were mainly informational…what have we done, and what is planned in each department for the next year or so, etc.

After the development authority training session, we approached Archway for ideas on finding the answers to these questions. We found out that other Archway communities had been doing these types of “let’s all get on the same page” sessions for the last few years, and that UGA Carl Vinson Institute had experience in leading and facilitating these types of meetings. Those present at this meeting included City of Thomson,  McDuffie County, Town of Dearing, McDuffie County Board of Education, Development Authority, and Forward McDuffie.
